Section 1
Android Automotive and Automotive AOSP Ecosystem
Android TM Automotive Operating System (AAOS) is an open source operating system, part of
Android Open Source Project (AOSP), designed to power In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI)
platforms. It is Android and lives in the same repository as Android for smartphones and tablets.
But it also extends the traditional Android as we know for smartphones, to support automotive
specific features like controlling car functions or providing APIs to access vehicle properties.
Android Automotive, runs natively on the vehicle IVI hardware, as opposed to Android Auto TM ,
also called “projected” or “mirroring” mode, which runs on the smartphone and projects
smartphone applications into compatible IVI systems over wired or wireless connection.
Among vehicle manufacturers adopting AOSP, some may be integrating Google Automotive Services (GAS), while others are using other services, including Appning Apps Market. As
such, our Apps Market is available in OEMs that don’t have Google Play Services for Cars which
is part of GAS, i.e. that are using Automotive AOSP.
To ensure standardisation and avoid fragmentation in the ecosystem, Appning is actively
involved on the Connected Vehicle Systems Alliance (COVESA) Automotive AOSP App Framework Standardization whose main objective is to make sure that App Developers can
easily build automotive apps for OEMs not using GAS. The group is not replacing the de facto
Android TM standard for app developers, but is, instead, bridging the gap, whenever needed, to
replace existing dependencies on Google Play Services for Cars.
